"Down Your Way" at The Half Moon, Alford, Lincolnshire
Laurence and Jane Gray were the organizers for this one. On a lovely sunny day we had a brilliant run out. Only eight people made it to Alford (where were you all on such a lovely day). The Roaches were also local to Alford, which just left the Ellentons and ourselves to drive down from the north bank. On such a lovely day we had the best of this since it was a pleasure to be out driving in such weather after recent conditions. So in addition to the Grays TR4A there were two TR3As and a TR6. After lunch (and a pint of Everard's Tiger bitter for me) we did a tour of the thatched manor house, and folk museum, almost opposite the pub. We then went around an "antique" shop, where Marlene Ellenton bought a very large adze!!
The idea for this came some weeks ago when Martyn & Jill Bell, and Mary & I were walking around Beverley. The Westwood hasn't been closed to walkers, but stock has not been allowed on it. Martyn said at some point that they'd just got a digital camera at work. At another point we said that we ought to organize more town centre events which people could attend despite restrictions. Putting 2 and 2 together I came up with the idea of a photo quiz, so we set out to organize it.
We took photos of small features such as door knockers, or corbels on buildings. We put the photographs in order and set out the route. We asked (for the most part) simple questions such as what number house was it. On the day we had no less than 20 participants. It was something children could do as well as adults. No special knowledge of Beverley was needed. Everyone got high scores. End result seemed to be 20 happy participants and 2 happy organizers at the Sun Inn, some of whom retired to the Pizza Express.
We thought it expedient to disqualify the winners!!! It was our wives Jill and Mary. They could not have had prior knowledge of the answers. The pictures and questions were on separate computers. The answers weren't recorded on either of them. BUT still it seemed expedient. So the winner of the bottle of Aussie red overall then became Jim Keane and his wife. Even local residents said that they'd discovered parts they didn't know existed. The Browns and Engerings tied for second place, but the Browns had it on the tie break question. Winners of the children's prize was the Sherburns with the Howards coming second.
