In the year 2000 our Group Leader was, Phil Warkup, a 66 year old farmer.

He set out on a 4,300 mile journey around the coast of Britain on 6th May 2000. This mammoth run was undertaken topless (his 1957 Triumph TR3, not Phil) in aid of the Leukaemia Research Fund.

The run is in memory of Babs Warkup, TR enthusiast, and Phil's late wife.
Babs died of leukaemia on 19th December 1999. The Leukaemia Research Fund is the same charity for which the Rylstone Women's Institute revealed all on their calendar.

Phil started on his tour of Britain from Bridlington, East Yorkshire, on 6th May 2000.

Bridlington

Polaroid picture Phil took of his daughter-in-law Julie, with the TR now decalled up, collecting for Leukaemia Research in Garrison Square, Bridlington on Friday 5th May 2000 (the day before he started out).

Bridlington Borough Council, and the Leukaemia Research Fund had arranged to keep Garrison Square, Bridlington (above the Piers and the Fair Ground on the sea front) free on the morning of the 6th. About 15 cars from Humber Bridge and Wharfedale groups turned out to give Phil a good send-off. On the East Coast we had been experiencing dull grey weather for a couple of weeks, with temperatures struggling to 8C, when some parts of Britain were at 17C in the sun. Well the 6th also heralded a change in the weather. The sun really did shine on the righteous.

For the first part of his journey Phil has the benefit of a navigator, in the form of Red Rose Group's Martin Hill. A large number of TRs accompanied Phil on the start of this coastal run, through Flamborough, Filey (one of Babs favourite spots) to Scarbrough. Some left us at this point. The remainder continued with Phil almost to Whitby, before splitting off from him to head off, up various 1 in 3s, to lunch at Egton Bridge, and return via Rosedale and the North Yorkshire Moors. On the climb up we saw wreaths of mist still hanging in the valleys from our previous grey murky weather.

Following Phil's phone message evening of 7th May: Phil and Martin were caught in mist and fog for much of their first day. They had intended taking a photo at Bamburgh Castle, but it was mist shrouded. Their first night should have been in Edinburgh. They stopped near Berwick but only found B&B at about their 12th attempt.

Phil is essentially low tech when it comes to IT, so no digital images being loaded direct from his car. He is posting Polaroid photos back to be scanned in.
